It is only in recent times that herbs have been prepared by cold maceration in alcohol and water; traditionally, decoctions and infusions (using the element of heat) were the most common methods used. Avicenna combines ancient practice with modern methods by using both hot and cold extraction to produce unique high quality tinctures, aromatic waters, and creams.
